The European Union will continue its intensive support for the UN political process in Syria and will work to strengthen the Syrian political opposition and civil society. High Representative Federica Mogherini and the European Commission have formulated a new proposal on a new forward-looking strategy for Syria. The paper comes as Syria enters its 6th year of conflict and following the resumption of the UN-led Geneva talks.

Mrs. Mogherini said that the EU supported a political solution to the war as the only way to bring peace to Syria. The joint communication also defined what the European Union could do in a post-agreement context and reconstruction. “And there is much the European Union is ready to do, together with the United Nations and the rest of the international community. The Syrians want peace, they deserve it, as they want and deserve to finally have the possibility to shape the future of their country. We are at their side to support the future of Syria,” Mrs. Mogherini added.

The proposal presents the current political, military and humanitarian context in Syria and the state of play of EU’s aid and assistance to the crisis. It also comes up with clear lines of action to implement these objectives, in close coordination with regional partners and international community, the EU plans to support Syria in the long-run. So far, the bloc has mobilized more than €9.4 billion in aid since the outbreak of the war, providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and resilience support to the Syrian people and neighboring countries hosting Syrian refugees.
